We are taught to work hard, study hard, and deprive ourselves – but who teaches us about pleasure? I remember my mother telling me, “Zahra, life is not about having fun.” Really? Who says? I wholeheartedly disagree. Life is absolutely about having fun. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing you can have fun doing it. But only if you say YES to the experience!
As we move into February, I invite you to open up to the feeling of YES in your body. By that I mean making an internal shift away from the feeling of “do I have to?” Towards the feeling of “yes”, “yum”, “bring it on!” Resistance or the internal “no” is a feeling your body and mind knows well. But you need to practice the feeling of “yes”. Instead of saying “I have to do the dishes” or “I have to do the laundry” or “I have to get up and go to work” soften the resistance and welcome the experience.
So how do we flip our “No” switch to a “Yes”?
Step 1: Focus on the why
Why are you washing dishes? It’s likely because you enjoy walking into a clean kitchen. Why do you do laundry? Probably because you love to wear fresh smelling, clean clothes. When you start off with the vision of ‘why’, you allow yourself to experience the good feelings born out of taking care of yourself and your family.
Step 2: Get fully engaged
The ego or thinking mind will try to fill your head with complaints and negativity that split you off from your body. But you can choose to disengage with the “busy-mind” and drop your awareness into the present moment. Breathe and feel yourself fully engaging with your hands, your feet, your butt (sitting in your chair) and ‘be’ where your body actually is in time and space. The resistance and “No” feeling will melt away when you get out of your head and into your body and feel.
Step 3: Add a dash of play
What would it be like to add a dash of play to something as mundane as washing dishes? What if you slipped into something sexy, put on a pair of high heels, and an apron (a cute apron of course), and you washed the dishes feeling all hot and steamy? Or you imagined yourself as Marilyn Monroe washing dishes? How different would you feel? Even if there was no one else around to watch your little show wouldn’t it feel delicious and delightful to spice things up just for you?
